I’m lucky because I’m pretty healthy. But, I do need my rabies and other vaccinations once a year. So Dr. Cecilia, comes to my house and gives me all my shots. She’s very gentle and I never cry!

My name is Amy, I live in Hollywood Beach, Florida. Thanks to my mommy calling Dr. Cecilia, I’m here to tell my story. My mommy knows I get very stressed out if she drives me to the veterinarian’s office, so she specifically looked for a vet who does house visits. Before I got sick, I was vivacious and a good eater.

My mommy always worries about me eating enough. One day I just stopped eating, and continued to vomit, over and over again. Dr. Cecilia came to my house for more than ten days, every day, giving me shoots and nutrients because I was so sick. Nothing helped! So together, Dr. Cecilia and my mom opted to have me undergo surgery to see if I had anything lodged or a tumor of some kind.

It turns out I had Helicobacter, a bacteria that causes ulcers and caused me to be so sick. For the next two weeks my mom stayed home with me, while Dr. Cecilia came to give me shoots and fluids, until I was all better.

Today, thanks to Dr. Cecilia’s expertise, I’m vivacious again, and eating up a storm.

• Just like with humans, treats should not replace regular meals for your pets. Not feeding your pets regular nutritionally sound meals, and/or replacing regular meals can lead to poor health or obesity.
• When introducing a new treat to your pet, do so in small amounts, be patient and do so in loving slow motions. Have the experience of initial new ‘treat time’ be a
  pleasant one for your beloved pet.
• Avoid giving your pet high calorie treats, as this may lead to obesity.

I’ve seen it many a times, loving pet owners want to share snacks such as fruits, veggies, candies, chocolates and cakes with their pets, feeling that not doing so is either selfish, or thinking that  since we reward ourselves with these treats that our pets should feel ‘rewarded’ as well.

The real question here is this: are these treats safe for pets? The answer, an emphatic NO! While pet owners should use ‘treat time’ as bonding time or for training purposes, please opt for commercial pet treats which are made specific for pets. The manufacturers who make these treats make sure that these treats are nutritionally sound, as well as ensuring that your pets’ digestive systems won’t be disturbed.

Some of my top food lists that you should avoid giving your pets:

• Recently,one of my clients made a major faux pas, she made her dogs mini turkey burgers with onions in them, a big no no! Onions disturb red blood cell levels which may lead to serious illness, even death!
• Avoid giving your dogs raisins and grapes which also cause major health issues in pets.
• Milk products should be avoided because some pets have had gastrointestinal (such as the stomach) disturbances.
• The yeast in bread dough given to one of my patients resulted in a major veterinary emergency. Please avoid this big no no!
• Avoid fruits with seeds (small or big) as these seeds can become lodged in your pet’s throat causing a painful death! Also, avoid avocados.
• Avoid giving your dogs macadamia nuts.
• I always say avoid giving your pets food you eat, but you should especially avoid giving your pets salt or salty food. Salt intake in pets can result in vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, and seizures.
• Avoid giving your pets CHOCOLATE. There are ingredients in chocolate such as caffeine and theobromine wich can lead to your pet’s death! All types of chocolates (including cocoa powder) should be avoided, the darker the chocolate, the more dangerous for your pet.
• Make sure your pet cannot get to your toothpaste, the ingredient xylitol, can lead to toxic results which lead to liver failure.
• Avoid CANDY, GUM, HUMAN COOKIES, HUMAN CAKES and the like, they also contain xylitol, a dangerous ingredient to your dog’s health.

Vet Home Express

Flashito, a very sweet pug, lives in Hollywood, Florida. His parents have sought out my home vet visit services since 2008. Flashito’s parents initially contacted me because he kept having breakouts on his face (sort of like acne) and he had very itchy feet, which he licked incessantly.

After numerous allergy tests, I discovered that Flashito has food allergy issues. Yes, dogs too suffer from food allergies. I’ve directed his parents to feed him a very specific type of dog food (much to his mother’s dismay, as she loves to feed him off the table) and I’m glad to write that Flashito is doing much better.
